he Petrale Sole, a member of the Pleuronectidae or right-eyed
flatfish family, is not a true sole but rather a flounder.
It is found over both rocks and soft bottom from the
Bering Sea to Baja California. Olivaceous in color so
as to blend in, it hides on the bottom awaiting to surprise
its prey. Its diet includes crabs, shrimp, and fish
such as anchovies, hake, small rockfish, and other flatfish.
It is the most sought after of all Pacific coast flatfish,
highly prized for its excellent flavor and fine-texture.
Pacific Coast Petrale and English sole stocks are
abundant; all environmental groups classify West coast
flatfish as a "green selection". The commercial
fishery is almost exclusively by trawl with all the
problems of by-catch and habitat destruction.
